Girls volleyball roundup: Bayside bests Townsend Harris, keeping playoff hopes alive

Sharon Ribera is not interested in bemoaning her team’s situation.

Yes, Bayside could end up missing the playoffs because of the strength of its division when it has beaten definite playoff teams from around the city in scrimmages and tournaments. But the second-year coach, a Francis Lewis alum, doesn’t want to hear it.

“I played in this league and now I’m coaching in it,” said Ribera, who also played collegiately at Adelphi. “I’m over hearing about how tough it is.”

Bayside took a step in the right direction with a 25-22, 25-23 win over Townsend Harris in PSAL Queens A6 girls volleyball Monday. Harris had beaten the Commodores earlier in the season and also owns a stunning win against Lewis.

“I knew we needed this one,” Ribera said. “This was kind of like a season turnaround for us.”

Alisha Erase had six kills, Katherine Coletti had two blocks and Yamile Rose had eight assists for Bayside (4-3). Bianca Dilan had seven kills, Sahityasri Thapi had 13 assists, Jennifer Yoo had 11 digs and Nicole Lopilato added nine digs for Harris (4-2).

The bad news for Bayside is it will probably have to beat Lewis or defending PSAL city champion Cardozo down the stretch to make the playoffs. Only teams that finish with a record above .500 earn a postseason berth and two of the Commodores’ three remaining games come against the powerhouses. Bayside did take a set from Lewis earlier this season.

Ribera is not looking at it in a negative way and neither are her players.

“The key would be continuing to play aggressive and defense and serve receive,” she said. “That’s my task for practice.”
