MLB: Rays win again

Ben Zobrist had three hits and three RBIs for the Rays, who beat the Orioles 5-2 for their fifth straight victory. Tampa Bay (82-64) has won eight of nine to move within three games of idle Boston in the AL wild-card race.

With the Red Sox having lost five straight games going into tonight’s game against Toronto, Boston slugger David Ortiz said it’s time to panic. “Hell, yeah. You’ve got to panic at this point,” he said. “We’ve got these guys breathing down our necks, and we’re not in first place either. We’ve got to come back and play better.”

GRID: Ex-Jet arraigned

Former NFL player Corwin Brown was arraigned in South Bend, Ind., on two counts of confinement and one count of domestic battery stemming from a nearly seven-hour standoff with police last month. Brown played eight seasons as a defensive back with the Patriots, Jets and Lions. He also is a former defense coordinator at Notre Dame.

NBA: Michael Jordan fined

Hall of Famer Michael Jordan was fined by the NBA for making comments about the league’s ongoing collective bargaining process. ESPN.com reported the Charlotte Bobcats chief was docked $100,000.

Meanwhile, both sides are scheduled to resume talks today in New York. If things go poorly, the NBA owners may include warnings that training camps in early October might have to be postponed.
