Yankees-Rays to play doubleheader in September

Although no official makeup date has been announced for yesterday’s Yankees-Rays game, which was postponed by rain, manager Joe Girardi said the two teams would play a doubleheader when Tampa Bay returns to New York. That means the makeup game will be played between Sept. 20-22 — the only time the Rays return to Yankee Stadium this season.

The Yankees and Rays originally were scheduled for a two-game series that week, with a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday, Sept. 20, and a 1 p.m. game on Wednesday, Sept. 21. But the teams now are slated to play a 7 p.m. game on Thursday, Sept. 22, to make up a game that was rained out July 8. Presumably, the teams will play a doubleheader on one of those three days in order to make up yesterday’s game.

The Yankees announced tickets for yesterday’s game may be used for the makeup game — as long as it is not scheduled as a single-admission doubleheader — or may be traded for tickets to any available game this season or next season.
