To keep the Jews, Obama might want to stop fighting over Israel’s capital

As the Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto reports, the Supreme Court is unlikely to be fooled by some really transparent White House internet tricks. There is a case pending before the Court regarding documents issued by the US embassy in Tel Aviv which currently do not identify Jerusalem as a city in Israel. The family of Menachem Zivotofsky argues that the boy’s passport is missing the country of his birth, Israel, even as it identifies the city of his birth, Jerusalem. Congress passed a law some years ago that documents issued to Jerusalem residents who request it will designate the country as Israel. The Obama administration is fighting the case and now the Supreme Court is due to hear it.

In the meantime, President Obama is thick into campaign season for his reelection and there are loyal Democrats who are feeling some remorse at having so vigorously supported Obama last time around. Notably, some Jews, who voted for Obama in record numbers, are now thinking he hasn’t been as good on Israel as they’d like.

Perhaps these concerned citizens might want to champion little Menachem’s plight and force Obama’s hand at the same time.

Want to feel good about voting for President Obama’s reelection? Liberals Jews should press the White House to drop their opposition to designating Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. They can feel good about their candidate going into the 2012 campaign and they would be reaffirming reality at the same time.

After all, Jerusalem is the capital of Israel!
