Nike Pro City notebook: Seagers’ jumper beats star-studded Queensbridge

Queensbridge had all the star power Tuesday night at Nike Pro City, from high-flying Ryan (Special FX) Williams to Steve Burtt Jr. and Ron (Metta World Peace) Artest. Primetime, however, had David Seagers.

Advantage, Primetime.

The little-known point guard from The Bronx sank the game-winning jumper with 10 seconds remaining as Primetime came back from a 19-point deficit to edge Queensbridge, 108-107, in overtime at Baruch College. The former Thurgood Marshall Academy standout, who just finished a solid career at Dowling College, had 15 points while Bryan Addison led Primetime with 34 points and Curt Cuffy also had 15 points.

“After I missed the free throw to win it in regulation, I had to make that shot,” he said.

Burtt led Queensbridge with 42 points, William, the former St. John’s star, added 27 on a series of crowd-pleasing dunks, and NBA champion World Peace had 22 points and 20 rebounds.

“It’s always fun to play against good players like that,” said Seagers, who plans to play overseas in the fall.

Barrett working way back: Andre Barrett, the former Rice and Seton Hall standout who has spent the last several years playing overseas and in the NBADL, was inactive this past winter after suffering a serious right ankle injury.

He initially sprained the ankle during workouts, then later had it stepped on. He looked good in the Franchise’s 115-107 loss to Dyckman/NYAC Tuesday night, scoring 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting and dishing out six assists.

Barrett just recently began playing full court, though he looked quick and nimble at Nike Pro City. His future remains up in the air. He has a few workouts with NBA tentatively scheduled because of the looming Lockout or could go back overseas, he said.

Cornell duo makes impact: Two years ago, Louis Dale and Jeff Foote led Cornell to its best season in program history, all the way to the Sweet 16, where it pushed Kentucky. They are still playing basketball together, only the setting is much different: Baruch College. The results remain similar. The duo paced Dyckman/NYAC in its 115-107 win over defending champion the Franchise Tuesday night.

Dales, a shifty 5-foot-11 guard, had 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists while the 7-foot Foote contributed 15 point and 13 rebounds. Former St. John’s Prep and Fordham star Bryant Dunston scored 34 points on 13-of-17 shooting. Dales has played at Nike Pro City before, but only sparingly. This summer, he is giving it his all.

“It’s a good atmosphere, crowd, I like the announcer. He always keeps it interesting and there’s great competition,” said Dales, who just finished a season overseas in Germany and is rooming with Foote and Ryan Wittman, another Cornell teammates, in the city this summer.
