Mets’ Reyes denies Boras rumor, sticking with rep Greenberg

Jose Reyes won’t be getting beamed up to Scotty anytime soon.

The Mets shortstop today responded to a report indicating he had met with super agent Scott Boras about his impending free agency by pledging allegiance to his current representative, Peter Greenberg.

“I’m happy with Peter,” Reyes said before the Mets faced the Angels today. “There is no chance I’m going to change my agent.”

Boras’ entrance into the equation would have essentially eliminated the possibility of Reyes re-signing with the Mets – or accepting a hometown discount to stay – before he hits free agency in November. Boras’ modus operandi is to have his clients become free agents and shoot for every last dollar available.

As it stands, there is thought to be at least a small chance Greenberg would be receptive to mulling an offer from the Mets during the season. But that is provided general manager Sandy Alderson is inclined to go that route.

Reyes indicated he has no strategy in place for his next contract.

“We’re not thinking about that yet, because [Greenberg] wants to let me play,” Reyes said. “Don’t worry too much about what’s going on with my contract in the middle of the season.

“I don’t want to put that kind of stuff in my head when I’m playing, but we’ll see what happens. I just want to continue to play.”
