Macy’s strike averted

After an all-night bargaining session with workers, Macy’s hammered out a deal to avert a walkout yesterday at its New York area stores.

The department-store giant — which hasn’t seen a strike since 1972 — reached the agreement hours before key stores, including its flagship in Herald Square, were to open. The contract covers 4,000 workers and includes three stores in The Bronx, Queens and Westchester.

Details of the pact, which replaces a contract that expired at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, weren’t available.

Ken Bordieri, president of Local 1-S of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, said the pact will be subject to a vote by members that will extend into the middle of next week. A Macy’s spokeswoman said stores will be open “without interruption” during the vote.
