Few Village fans of ‘cool’ MTA

Greenwich Village residents are hot and bothered over a new MTA plan to build a $108 million ventilation plant in the historic landmarked neighborhood.

The structure, slated to be built at Mulry Square at Greenwich Avenue and Seventh Avenue South, will house giant fans that can cool the subway system in case of emergency.

The building will resemble neighboring townhouses and will feature a brick façade and glazed-over windows.

“The design they propose is really an eyesore,” said Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.

The MTA hopes to hire a contractor this year.

“The new plans essentially address some of the community’s concerns regarding aesthetics,” said agency spokesman Kevin Ortiz.
