NEWARK, N.J. — A prosecutor’s office in New Jersey says an off-duty Newark police officer has died after being shot in a restaurant Thursday night.
Essex County Prosecutor’s spokeswoman Kathy Carter says she doesn’t have further details and can’t release the name of the officer, a 16-year veteran of the police force.
Mayor Cory Booker said in an early-morning news conference the officer was 45 years old, lived in Newark and had children.
A man and woman were also wounded at the drive-by shooting at the Texas Fried Chicken and Pizza restaurant around 9:45 p.m.
A manhunt for the suspects in the shooting went through the night.
Carter says her office will release more details at a news conference later Friday morning.
