New meter bill just the ticket

The City Council will star today in its own version of “Parking Wars” when a committee hears testimony from motorists claiming that they were unfairly ticketed.

The council is considering legislation, steered by Speaker Christine Quinn, that would require traffic agents to tear up tickets on the spot for drivers in the process of paying for muni-meter spots while parked.

Derrick Caldwell, a Department of Education repairman from Brooklyn, said he planned to tell what happened to him recently while parked on Church Street in lower Manhattan. He said since his meter was expired, he walked to the nearest operable one, only to wind up ticketed.

“It’s frustrating when you’re trying to do the right thing,” he said. “And the inoperable meter cost me $55.”
