LI man arrested on drunken driving charges

ELMONT, N.Y. — Nassau County police who stopped a driver who was swerving and speeding found that the device in the vehicle for analyzing breath samples had been disabled.

Authorities stopped the 52-year-old Long Island man around 5:15 a.m. Sunday and arrested him for aggravated driving while intoxicated. Upon checking the car, police found that the car had an ignition interlock device which wasn’t working.

The device analyzes breath samples for blood-alcohol content before allowing a car to start and is typically installed by court order. The idea is if the driver is drunk, the car doesn’t start. It’s not clear how or why it was disabled.

The man also faces charges including operating a vehicle without a court-ordered interlock device.
