Zenyatta might not retire after Breeders’ Cup Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic might not be the final start for Zenyatta after all, co-owner Jerry Moss said at today’s post-position draw after the undefeated 6-year-old mare was installed the heavy favorite at 8-5 to win the Classic for the second straight year. A victory would run her record to 20-for-20.

“We’re not certain,” Moss said. “The options are open. We’re taking it race by race. There are no plans (to breed her) after the Breeders’ Cup. We’ll see how she comes out of it, sit down, have a nice dinner and talk it over.”

Moss, the co-founder with Herb Alpert of A&M Records, indicated that Zenyatta would be retired after she won last year’s Classic, but a few weeks later the decision was made to race her again this year.

“I retired her without speaking to my wife (co-owner Ann Moss), and that was a big mistake,” he said.
