Girls soccer roundup: Staniszewska leads Lafayette over Robert Wagner

Sandra Staniszewska has made Lafayette go all year. Now she has them headed to the quarterfinals.

The senior forward, who had 10 goals during the regular season, scored twice in the No. 10 Patriots’ 2-0 upset of seventh-seeded Robert F. Wagner Jr. in the opening round of the PSAL Class B girls soccer playoffs on Monday. She scored on a breakaway in the 15th minute and kicked in a rebound 10 minutes later.

“She leads the team morale when she puts the ball in the net,” Lafayette coach Stephanie Holmes said. “It keeps our defense going strong.”

The victory was Lafayette’s first postseason win, after it finished fourth in Brooklyn B-VII. Holmes credited her defense for limiting Wagner’s offensive chances and shutting down the few times they got behind them. “It’s great for our girls to see what it is really like to play in the playoffs,” Holmes said…“In the next couple year’s those girls will develop and help us even more.”
