Chelsea gets an after show

Chelsea Handler, meet Larry Sanders.

Handler, who hosts E!’s late-night talk show “Chelsea Lately,” will star in a spinoff series of sorts called “After Lately,” modeled somewhat on HBO’s 1990s series, “The Larry Sanders Show.”

“After Lately,” a semi-scripted half-hour sitcom, will take a look at what goes on behind-the-scenes on “Chelsea Lately” — much like “Sanders” explored the office and personal life of fictitious talk-show host Larry Sanders, played by Garry Shandling.

E! has ordered eight episodes of the series which, Handler told Variety, is “a perfect platform for people who have no business being on camera.”

The series will go into production in the next few weeks.

“After Lately,” which doesn’t yet have a premiere date, is part-and-parcel of the new deal Handler signed with E!, keeping her at the Comcast-owned network through at least 2012.
