‘Croc’ and awe in Queens

That urban legend about alligators living in New York’s sewers might not be a croc after all.

A baby reptile (pictured) popped out of a storm drain in Queens yesterday and became an instant celebrity on the block.

“I opened the window and everyone was yelling, ‘Crocodile!’ I expected something a little bigger,” laughed one neighbor who lives near the drain on Newtown Avenue and 29th Street in Astoria.

“Everybody laughs about that urban myth, but there you go,” said the woman.

Cops who caught the cute 18-inch creature were also puzzled.

Police spokesman James Duffy said, “It could have been dumped from a car — or it could have come out of a sewer.”

Animal Care and Control is finding the creature a home at a reptile sanctuary.
