Dustin nabs Ryder spot

KOHLER, Wis. — If it’s any consolation, Dustin Johnson can be happy about making the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

His T-5 finish and $270,833 in prize money earned him enough points to be among the top eight automatic qualifiers in the points standings, where he finished sixth.

The other members of the U.S. team include: Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar.

Tiger Woods finished 12th on the list behind Anthony Kim, Lucas Glover and Zach Johnson.

U.S. captain Corey Pavin will round out the 12-man team with four picks he’ll announce on Sept. 7. The Ryder Cup is Oct. 1-3 in Wales.

England’s Paul Casey is among several European players who have elected to stay in America to compete in the FedEx Cup instead of playing in Europe to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team.

Casey has talked to European captain Colin Montgomerie and hopes to be an at-large pick.

“The big goal from an individual standpoint is playing in the Tour Championship,” Casey said. “I had a chat with Colin and explained that is a goal I want to accomplish and have a chance to win the FedEx Cup. Whoever he picks, he wants guys playing competitive golf.”

Ian Poulter withdrew yesterday because of a chest infection. His departure left Overton without a playing partner for the first tee time.

Overton finished his round in two hours and nine minutes, which is believed to the fastest round in PGA Championship history. He shot a 7-over 79 to finish at 10-over.
