JAKARTA, Indonesia — The U.S. Geological Survey says a powerful earthquake has hit waters off Indonesia’s eastern coast.
The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 and was centered off Sulawesi island, around 54 miles (87 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in Manado, a city 110 miles (177 kilometers) away.
Indonesia rests on a series of fault lines that make the sprawling archipelago nation one of the most earthquake-prone.
