Senate Democrats to vote on campaign money bill

WASHINGTON — Democrats plan a showdown on a new campaign disclosure bill in the Senate next week.

The party hopes to win Republican support with a measure that eliminates some exemptions for unions. Those carve-outs had been included in a House-passed version of the legislation.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., filed a proposal in the Senate this week that would impose new donor and contribution disclosure requirements on nearly all organizations airing political ads independently of candidates or the political parties.

The bill is a response to a Supreme Court ruling in January that permits corporations and unions to spend their own funds on television commercials, mass mailings to the general public and other political activity that advocates for the election or defeat of candidates.
