Vandal out of his tree

If a tree grows in Brooklyn, don’t show it to this guy.

Steve Maynard, 35, spent the past few weeks, if not years, tearing limbs off trees across the borough, causing at least $200,000 in damage to those along Eastern Parkway and in Prospect Park before finally getting busted, authorities said.

The off-his-meds Maynard, who wore a lumberjack hat, told Parks officers, “There are demons in the trees, and I had to cut them down.”

He said the demons “were responsible for the death of” an imaginary person named Amy, Joseph Pulio, head of the city’s Parks Enforcement Patrol Officers union, told The Post. Maynard, a former construction worker, was remanded by a Brooklyn judge yesterday for a psychiatric evaluation.

“He was cooperative, and he’s a peaceful guy,” said his lawyer, Sara Feinberg. “Jail would not do him any good.”

Maynard’s sister, who declined to give her name said, “All this could have been prevented” if doctors at Bellevue had listened to the family’s pleas not to release him after an arrest in June.
