Strong week for saltwater anglers

It was another great week for saltwater fishing with big bass, big fluke and jumbo porgies all in the mix.

The sultry weather has raised water temperatures and tuna have moved inshore. There was a very good yellowfin bite at Hudson Canyon and the Dip.

Bluefin tuna showed just south of the Coimbra Wreck in just 200 feet of water. Medium sized bluefins have been moving along the 30 Fathom Curve.

Inshore anglers have been hammering stripers along the South Shore of Long Island. Bass in the 25-35 pound range were taken from Breezy Point to Debs Inlet by trollers and those using live bait. There has been a ton of bunker moving along the beaches as far east Fire Island and the blues and bass are right on their tails. The bait fish have been close to the beaches and a good reason why bathers have been bitten by bluefish.

Porgies and sea bass are at the Rockaway Reef. The porgy fishing this year has been very good and some real jumbos have taken from the waters around Montauk.

Most of the bays along Long Island’s South Shore are giving up keeper fluke. From Sheepshead Bay to Captree party and charter boats are putting in the time on summer flounder and most of their customers are going home with their two big keepers.

Large bluefish have taken over in the western Sound with choppers to 19 pounds being caught. Again it’s been large bunker schools that have the blues on the feed and chasing the bunker in Eastchester Bay, Hempstead Harbor, Little Neck Bay and Steppingstone Light.

Big porgies are also on the menu for Long Island Sound anglers and most of the local party boats are getting in on the action.
