Family, friends attend funeral for Sen. Robert Byrd

A funeral service was held in northern Virginia Tuesday for the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd, who died last week at the age of 92.

The service was held at the Memorial Baptist Church in Arlington, Va. and attended by family and friends.

The longest-serving senator in U.S. history will be laid to rest next to his wife Erma, who died in 2006.

The West Virginia Democrat was remembered last week by U.S. political luminaries including President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and former president Bill Clinton at a memorial service held on the capitol steps of his home state .

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, who called Byrd “without question, a pillar in our history” has said he would not begin the search for Byrd’s replacement until after Tuesday’s service.
