Mets’ Castillo closer to disabled list

SAN DIEGO — Luis Castillo is expected to be examined Thursday after an aching right heel forced him to miss a scheduled start against the Padres on Wednesday, the latest scratch of the Mets second baseman who has been virtually reduced to a part-time player in recent weeks.

It’s possible Castillo will be placed on the disabled list.

Castillo, who is battling a bone bruise in his left foot and more recently the sore right heel, has grown weary of missing games to rest the injuries.

“I don’t want to play one game and miss the next game,” Castillo said before the Mets faced the Padres. “I want to play every game when I have a chance to play.”

Castillo said the sore heel is more an issue than the bone bruise. Walking is a bigger problem for him than running.

“For him to move in the manner he’s moving out there is not good,” Jerry Manuel said.

If Castillo is placed on the disabled list, Ruben Tejada would be an option to take his roster spot. Manuel said he does not envision Daniel Murphy in the mix. Murphy recently began playing second base at Triple-A Buffalo but is still in the early stages of acquainting himself with position.
