One-year-old girl dies after being pulled from fire in Buffalo home

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Authorities say a baby girl has died after being pulled from her family’s burning Buffalo home.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out Thursday morning at the home of Daniel and Patty Heitman (HYTE’-man). Officials say Daniel Heitman, a mechanic, was outside working on a car when his wife stepped outside briefly, along with their 3-year-old daughter.

Patty Heitman then noticed smoke coming from the house, where the couple’s 1-year-old daughter Nova was napping in a first-floor bedroom. Neighbors tried to rescue her but were driven back by thick smoke.

Firefighters eventually pulled the girl from the home, but she died soon after at a Buffalo hospital.

The couple’s oldest daughter was in school.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
