Box Office: Jenny soft, ‘Losers’ flops, ‘Kick-Ass’ plummets

Women didn’t exactly turn out in droves for Jennifer Lopez’ first post-natal flick during a slow weekend at the box office. CBS Films’ “The Back-Up Plan” opened in second place to a soft estimated $12.5M, well behind the fifth weekend of DreamWorks’ hardy “How to Train Your Dragon” at $15M for a $178M domestic gross to date.

Dark Castle and Warners’ “The Losers” more than lived down to its name and was DOA with an estimated $9.6M, landing in fourth place after the third weekend of Fox’s resilient “Date Night” ($10.6M).

Predictions by Lionsgate that last week’s underperforming leader “Kick-Ass” would have a strong hold failed to materialize, as the much-hyped superhero spoof plummeted 52 percent to an estimated $9.5M. That confirmed suspicions that the flick’s word-of-mouth in no way matches its reviews and pretty much drives a stake through fanboys’ hopes for a sequel in the foreseeable future.

In fact, the best per-location average ($4,975) in the top 10 was posted by Disney’s doc “Oceans,” which collected an estimated $6 million at 1,200 locations over three days, in addition to $2.4 million for its Earth Day opening.
