Bret Michaels ‘stabilized and conscious’ despite brain hemorrhage

Rocker Bret Michaels, hospitalized with bleeding at the base of his brain stem, is “awake, in good spirits and talking,” according to a report by entertainment website TMZ.

The former Poison frontman was reported to be in a critical condition at an undisclosed Los Angeles area hospital after a brain haemorrhage on Thursday night.

But Ambre Lake, the winner of season two of Michaels’ “Rock of Love” reality show, told TMZ she had spoken with people who said he was stabilized and conscious.

Another source has confirmed that Michaels is stable, but it is believed the next 24-48 hours will be critical in his recovery.

According to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, people who don’t receive proper medical treatment after suffering a subarachnoid haemorrhage have a 20-30 percent chance of experiencing a second bleed within the first month — and the odds of surviving a second bleed are extremely slim.

Michaels’ publicist, Joann Mignano, confirmed a report on People magazine’s website Friday that Michaels was rushed to intensive care late Thursday following a severe headache, and that doctors discovered bleeding at the base of his brain stem.

Michaels is starring in the current season of “Celebrity Apprentice” in the U.S., with the show’s host property tycoon Donald Trump sending the rocker and his family his best wishes.

“He’s a great competitor and champion and I hope he will be fine,” Trump said.

The 47-year-old reality TV star and former frontman for the ’80s rock band Poison had an emergency appendectomy last week.

After that surgery the diabetic said on his website that although the surgery “has taken its toll,” doctors expected him to make a full recovery.
