Bank heists suspect sentenced to 3 years

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A New York man suspected of robbing banks in several states after doing prison time for a 1988 armored car company robbery has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Federal prosecutors say 51-year-old Gary LaTray was sentenced Tuesday in his hometown of Syracuse for violating terms of his probation.

LaTray was convicted of armed robbery in 1990 for the $3 million holdup at the AMSA Armored Car Co. in suburban Syracuse. He was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison and was released in June 2007. Officials say he violated his probation when he absconded in May 2009.

He was arrested in February in Upshur County, W.Va., and charged with robbing a Virginia bank last December. He’s also a suspect in robberies in Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
