Box Office: Going Greek for Easter

Warners’ “Clash of the Titans,” arriving in theaters with 8 p.m showings tonight, is expected to collect somewhere north of $60 million by Sunday night. At least half of the 3,700 theaters where it’s showing will be offering “Titans” on at least one 3D screen — about 17 percent fewer screens than are playing DreamWorks’ “How to Save Your Dragon” in 3D, according to The Hollywood Reporter. At the Lincoln Square, they’re charging $17.50 for an evening adult ticket, five bucks more than the regular 2D version (It’s not showing in IMAX). “Clash” is averaging only 38 percent positive reviews at Rotten Tomatoes. Reversing the usual generational divide for a genre film, reviews among “top critics” rise to a positive 62 percent — many of these older critics are clearly nostalgic about the 1981 original and the whole cheesy sword, sandals and sorcery genre. Among them is Roger Ebert, who screened the film in 2D and actively recommends in his three star notice against spending an extra $5 to watch the 3D version. Professional fanboy Drew McWeeney of HitFlix, who watched the stereoscopic version, snorts in his pan: “If Avatar was the game-changer, as James Cameron claimed, then Clash Of The Titans, rushed through post in four months to exploit the 3D craze, has the potential to be the game-ender.” My colleague Kyle Smith will have a review in tomorrow’s print editon. “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too,” following the helmer and Lionsgate’s customary nonengagement policy, was not screened for critics. Tracking indicates an opening in the mid-20s and a third place finish behind “Dragon,” which is forecast to collect around $30M after a disappointing opening weekend. Disney’s reprehensible Miley Cyrus vehicle “The Last Song” entered the marketplace yesterday and scathing reviews — 13 percent at Rotten Tomatoes and a much-quoted zero star review from yours truly — aren’t expected to keep it from reaching the mid-teens.
