Mets 50-50 to sign Barajas

A Mets official termed it “50-50” that the club will sign catcher Rod Barajas, who has been offered a minor-league contract.

If added, Barajas would join Omir Santos, Josh Thole and Henry Blanco in the mix for the starting catcher’s job.

Tuesday, Omar Minaya declared the catching competition was between Santos and Thole.

FOXSports.com reports the Mets are “negotiating with (Barajas) on a one-year deal, according to major-league sources.

“Barajas, 34, likely would get the bulk of playing time for the Mets …,” Rosenthal writes.

Barajas hit .226 for the Blue Jays last season. The Rangers and Mariners also are looking for a catcher.

The Mets were unable to sign free agents Bengie Molina and Yorvit Torrealba this offseason.
