Oprah most popular on TV, followed by Beck: poll

TV talk queen Oprah Winfrey may be America’s most popular boob tube celebrity — but she has some surprising new company near the top of that list.

A new Harris Poll released today reveals that Winfrey is only more popular than Fox News Channel commentator Glenn Beck, a newcomer to TV.

The poll, which is conducted annually, showed Oprah regaining the top spot after trailing Jay Leno, actor Hugh Laurie of “House” and Ellen DeGeneres last year.

The fiery Beck, who is also known to shed a tear or two during his political monolgues, premiered his Fox News show just last year. Beck is already a popular radio host and best-selling author.

Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly came in at No. 10.

The poll was conducted last month among 2,276 adults surveyed over the Internet.

Leno — who NBC recently named to return as host host of “The Tonight Show” in place of Conan O’Brien — came in third, according to the poll.

DeGeneres finished fourth, tied with Laurie.
