DA investigating former top cop’s accident

Former Police Commissioner Howard Safir is not off the hook for allegedly backing his Cadillac SUV into a pregnant woman on the Upper East Side last week, then driving off.

Manhattan’s new District Attorney, Cy Vance, has opened an investigation into the accident, according to DA spokeswoman Erin Duggan.

The victim, seven-months-pregnant Joanne Valarezo, of the Bronx, suffered a bruised shoulder — and has insisted Safir saw her before splitting. But cops decided not to charge Safir after the ex-commish said he never saw Valarezo.

“Our office is looking into it,” Duggan said of the he-says-she-says dispute. “We’ll definitely be taking it seriously.”

The accident occurred Friday afternoon at Third Avenue and 81st Street. Safir served as police commissioner under Rudy Giuliani.
