Staten Island prisoner injured in failed escape

Talk about being gone with the wind.

A prisoner was able to inexplicably break free this morning as he was being taken out of the 120th Precinct stationhouse on Staten Island — then gave cops a wild chase on the tracks of the Staten Island Railway station near the St. George terminal.

Naquan Thompson, 22, broke his ankle during a jump down from the north ramp at the ferry terminal onto the tracks below, then ended up cornered in a train car about 20 minutes after he boldly fled, the Staten Island Advance reported on its Web site.

The incident, which occured around 11:25 a.m., was caught on video after TV cameras were posted outside to capture footage of the chain-gang of jailbirds being taken to a nearby courthouse.

It appears that officers didn’t realize Thompson had broken free until several cameramen pointed it out.

A WABC-TV/Channel 7 camerawoman clearly captured the escape, and followed Thompson with his lens as the man sprinted around the corner, around a woman and out of view.

How Thompson was able to escape is under investigation, although the footage shows him loosenign his cuffs as the men are being walked down the precinct steps.

Thompson escaped from police custory while being loaded onto a bus headed to criminal court for his arraignment for sticking-up a deli.

Cops closed off a part of Victory Blvd. and the nearby ferry terminal for nearly 30 minutes while they searched for Thompson.

The Staten Island DA’s office said Thompson will be arraigned this week, although it is not known if he faces additional charges when he appears in front of a judge.
