Vagrants’ cold comfort

The freezing weather has prompted city officials to increase efforts to get homeless people off the streets.

The Department of Homeless Services, which issued its most serious weather alert on Sunday night, planned to issue another alert last night, when, the National Weather Service predicted, temperatures would dip to the low to mid-20s.

During weather alerts, the city doubles its outreach vans to 10. Van workers encourage homeless people to accept shelter and look for symptoms of hypothermia and frostbite. They also help the homeless with case management.

Also during weather alerts, homeless people can skip normal intake procedures when entering DHS facilities.
