Outdoors class for women

Women from around the state can advance their outdoor skills by attending a New York sponsored workshop.

Becoming an Outdoorswoman is a program that offers weekend-long, outdoor skills workshops for women ages 18 or older. Nearly 25 different classes will be offered at the Rensselaerville workshop.

The classes include ice fishing, snowshoeing, winter camping, trail cameras, bicycle maintenance, winter survival, cross country skiing, fly tying, ecology of the winter forest, reading wildlife sign and backcountry skiing. The sessions also include a biathalon-type class that combines snowshoeing and target shooting with .22-caliber rifles.

The workshop will be held Jan. 29-31 at the Rensselaerville Meeting Center in Albany County. The early registration fee is $310, which covers instruction in three classes, meals, two nights lodging, program materials and use of equipment.

Information and registration materials are available on the DEC Web site at http://www.dec.ny.gov. Info is also available by calling the DEC at (518) 402-8862.

On Dec. 14, Capt. Rich Jensen will appear at the Sportfishing on Long Island class, which is sponsored by the Suffolk County Parks and Recreation Dept. Capt. Rich owns and operates the Nancy Ann IV, an Orient-based charterboat. A third generation, full-time fisherman, Jensen has a wealth of angling knowledge to share with others. The class will be held at the H. Lee Dennison Building on Vets’ Highway in Hauppauge at 7:30 p.m. The session is free. For information, call (631) 929-8337.

The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife will hold a public forum to discuss freshwater fisheries culture, research, management and recreational angling on Saturday at the Hackettstown State Fish Hatchery in Warren County. The forum will begin at 10 a.m.

Pre-registration is not required but is appreciated. Call (908) 236-2118 or send an e-mail to njfwfish@earthlink.net. Include name, address, phone number and the number of people attending.
