It took about 40 years, but a traffic light is finally being installed at the intersection of Farragut Road and East 79th Street.
Assemblymember Helene Weinstein shared the news with members of the Friends United Block Association (FUBA), gathered at Temple Shaare Emeth, 6012 Farragut Road, for their November meeting.
Weinstein said she had gotten a letter from the city’s Department of Transportation (DOT) indicating that the light would be up by the end of November, following a letter of her own requesting the light that was sent this past February.
“Over the years, we’ve talked about Farragut Roadf being a speedway,” noted Weinstein, who once lived nearby, and recalled the years that area residents had asked for a traffic light to be placed at the intersection, to no avail.
“There’s a light at East 78th Street,” she went on. “Once there’s the light at 79th Street, it will help improve the safety of everybody, both car owners and those who don’t have those several-ton vehicles to protect them, pedestrians and children.”
The light is being installed as a result of a traffic study at the intersection that was completed by DOT in July, according to a letter from DOT Borough Commissioner Joseph Palmieri, that was sent to Weinstein.
