LAKEWOOD, NJ — Smoking likely caused a fire that killed a man in a New Jersey motel, investigators said yesterday.
Smoke poured from the roof of the Capitol Motel in Lakewood early Sunday, causing police to evacuate the building.
The only casualty was a man who had a room on the third floor. Authorities did not release his name, pending family notification.
Police Lt. William Addison said the fire appeared to be an accident.
Three cops were treated for smoke inhalation.
