Keepin’ It ‘Real’: ‘Three’s a Crowd’

By Anthony Sulla-Heffinger

Let me start off by saying that I was really looking forward to this episode, as the eventual threesome between Pat, Jonna and Ayiiia could have made this episode one of the most memorable not only in Cancun, but also in all of “Real World.” But it wasn’t.

It’s no secret that Ayiiia likes to experiment, as her fling with Emilee proved earlier on this season. But her relationship back home was fleshed out a little more in this episode. Her boyfriend back home is named Ryan, and they have a bit of an on-again/off-again relationship.

Laying all of the cards on the table may have been a theme for Ayiiia this week, as she reveals that she also has an infatuation with Jonna, putting her amongst a group that consists of CJ, Matt, Kirk and Pat. Ayiiia bets her friends from home, who were so blah that they may as well have stayed home, that she will hook up with Jonna.

There’s only one small problem: Pat. Jonna and Pat’s relationship is budding, but Jonna feels as if her life is upside down.

On the one hand, she feels she may be making the wrong decision by ditching Matt for the dreamy DJ. On the other hand, Pat makes her feel like she is a little kid and she enjoys spending time with him (hence the predicament).

After squashing any unresolved tension between Jonna, Jasmine – who’s now dating Pat’s cousin JR (he’s her silver medal) – proposes the idea for a double date between the Cancun roomies and their Canadian counterparts.

This has “awkward” written all over it. To make things even more fun, and hopefully lessen the tension, Jonna gets Emilee to chaperon the dinner; Nothing like dating under Momma Em’s watchful eye, right?

Emilee winds up being the referee as Pat delivers some vicious verbal blows to Jasmine throughout dinner, to the point where even Jonna asks him to stop.

Upon returning home, Jonna calls Matt, who tells her that he hasn’t slept or eaten in nearly a week, and is continuously vomiting. Jonna and him speak for almost an hour and the conversation ends with Matt threatening to walk into oncoming traffic and telling Jonna she doesn’t have a soul; Looks like this dude is taking the break-up a little bit rougher than Jonna.

As Jonna recruits Derek to put the final touches on the break-up with Matt by removing his pictures from the wall, it seems as if she may be regretting her decision.

Bronne, who is unfortunately now reduced to a cameo role, chimes in for his quote of the week after Jonna asks if she is a bad person for breaking up with Matt.

Bronne lets the viewers know his opinion on the matter, claiming that Jonna isn’t a bad person, “Hitler and Stalin killed millions of people, Jonna, you aren’t Stalin.” Maybe now she can feel a little bit better about herself.

Ayiiia then begins to launch her master plan to make out with Jonna, and while she accomplishes that goal while out at a club, she goes above and beyond the call of duty back at the house.

While Jonna is giving viewers a confessional crotch shot and then bringing Pat behind the bench to hook up, Ayiiia walks in and interrupts the two, and makes her way into the equation. One thing leads to another and the trio find themselves in Jonna’s bed with Pat trying to convince himself that what is happening is real and that he isn’t dreaming.

The next morning, Jonna and Ayiiia agree to keep their threesome a secret amongst the other roommates, as they feel it is private business and they secretly regret doing it.

Being on the “Real World” for a while now, you would think that they would have learned you cannot keep anything secret for long, and eventually the whole house winds up in the loop.

The reactions are pretty widespread.

Emilee, disgusted by Pat seeing as he has hooked up with every female in the house besides her, feels betrayed by Jonna. Jasmine, who reacts similarly to Derek, doesn’t really have much of a reaction when Ayiiia informs her of the situation. Bronne didn’t expect it but doesn’t really care and CJ is disappointed in Pat because he would have picked someone other than Ayiiia.

The episode ends with Jonna wondering where she is going to wind up with Pat, as one night she calls him and he blows her off, leaving her with a deer-in-the-headlights look, and with Ayiiia struggling with her sexual identity and pressure of her family.

Next week the roomies go to Vegas, and it appears as if the boys have a wild time. Bronne films a zombies in Mexico short movie and CJ gets to punt in front of NFL scouts.
