Keepin’ It ‘Real’: Spring Break Ends For Joey

By: Anthony Sulla-Heffinger

After the video conference call with Christina and the StudentCity supervisors, Joey was given a second chance to shape up and stay on the show. Unfortunately, Joey missed another shift, prompting Christina and StudentCity to fire the rocker and send him packing.

It was probably inevitable that Joey was going to go home sooner or later, considering his rebel rock star mentality. I don’t think anyone could have personified the rocker stereotype more than Joey did during his time on the show.

But we’ll talk more about that later; first let’s recap this week’s episode.

Joey calls his mom back home to tell her about his second chance, but his wild nature just makes him “want to break the rules.” Joey, and the rest of his roommates, needed to step it up this week as it was “Peak Week” — meaning nearly 70 percent of colleges in the US were heading on spring break. Despite all of the Joey drama, we finally get a “Bronne” episode. Bronne has basically been a ghost so far this season, popping in occasionally for some humor or to prove how out of sync he is with the house happenings.

Aside from being a main player in the episode, Bronne finally nabs himself a woman in Cancun, and he went all out.

Bronne meets and hooks up with a playboy model named Vicki, and he proceeds to use his light-hearted humor to bring the centerfold back to the house.

Bronne seals the deal by telling the model about his hair washing technique. When she says his hair is so soft, Bronne replies, “I just wash it with soap.” Hey Bronne, what’s the name of the Playboy-luring soap you use?

While Bronne is “washing his hair” with Vicki at the house, Jasmine is also trying to launch her master plan to sleep with her DJ project Pat.

Jasmine, who basically throws herself at her Canadian crush, is turned down by Pat despite her aggressive advances, which catapults the roomie into a sexually frustrated rage. Jasmine remains persistent, but flips out later on in the episode when even Derek brings home a guy.

The roommates get assigned to run a week of events surrounding “Peak Week” and they are in charge of taking care of LMFAO, a hip-hop/dance/techno group (who are totally awesome).

The guys from LMFAO spark huge parties and fun wherever they go with the roomies. Poolside at the hotel, LMFAO bears witness to the “Gentlemen’s Agreement” between Bronne and Joey regarding another one of Bronne “Hugh Hefner” Playboy models.

(FYI, the gentleman’s agreement becomes null and void when Emilee hooks up with the model that same night.)

Pat re-enters the scene by calling Jonna to give him a haircut. Jasmine, who is all over Pat, becomes jealous and upset that Pat is seeking this attention from Jonna and not her. Jonna’s flirty side kicks in as she gives Pat a haircut and takes some pictures with him that night at the club. Jonna’s continuous flirting may seem harmless, but when it’s with someone your roommate is after, it becomes a problem, just ask Q from LMFAO.

After the VIP concert by LMFAO, the castmates invite the group back to the house to party until 4:30 a.m., which isn’t good considering Joey has a breakfast shift at 9:30 a.m. CJ sets the alarm and they all go to sleep.

The next morning, when Bronne wakes up CJ and Joey, they realize they didn’t hear the alarm and Joey has missed his shift, meaning he will be in serious trouble considering he was already on probation.

Despite Bronne’s pleading with Christina and CJ taking the fall for the alarm, Joey is given his plane ticket to go back home, much to Ayiiia’s pleasing.

All of the roommates, sans Ayiiia, are heartbroken that Joey is going home, as they seemed to think everyone was beginning to mesh together nicely.

While he did miss a shift, I think StudentCity took it too far by firing Joey. He made a legitimate effort to show up to work on time, he just didn’t hear his alarm.

Joey was a real jerk at times but he did add a lot of excitement to the show and was entertaining to watch. Hopefully his replacement, who remains nameless, will be able to spark some fun and interesting events for the remainder of the “Real World Cancun.”
