Maine seeking second opinion

HOUSTON — The Mets have confirmed reports that John Maine plans to seek a second opinion on his ailing right shoulder from noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., next week.

That isn’t a good sign for Maine’s season because he appeared close to returning to the Mets’ rotation after throwing a 65-pitch simulated game in Port St. Lucie this week.

The shoulder didn’t respond well to that outing, though, and now Maine wants to know if the problem is more than just the pinched nerve in his shoulder that forced him to go on the DL in early June.
