MTA BOARD MEMBERS, ADVOCATES WANT WALDER CONFIRMED

Two MTA board members and transit advocates are asking lawmakers to put Gov. Paterson’s pick for MTA chief on the express track.

A letter sent to Senate leadership urges key Democrats to quit stalling on holding confirmation hearings for Jay Walder, a transit expert who has been tapped by Paterson to helm the agency.

Some Senators have called for hearings in every borough — similar to those held for fare hikes — which could stretch out Walder’s confirmation for months.

“We do not believe that a series of hearings throughout the region is required,” write MTA board members Ira Greenberg and Andrew Albert, along with several other transit advocates.

“The Senate should immediately begin the confirmation process for a new MTA Chairman and conclude it without undue delay,” they wrote.
