3 UP: HUGHES AND JOBA

1. You know what Phil Hughes looked like on Tuesday night? He looked like a guy worth waiting for. He looked like the kind of guy you do think long and hard about giving up, even for Johan Santana. He looked like part of the solution for the 2009 Yankees.

Of course, we should all keep one start in perspective. The best game Hughes had ever pitched previously was on May 1, 2007 when he threw 6 1-3 no-hit innings against Texas. But he popped his hamstring that night and did not pitch for three months. Then last season he started eight games without winning any. The only Yankee to ever start more games in a season without a win was the nine games by his teammate Ian Kennedy.
