CRAIGSLIST CEO DEFENDS SITE, SAYS IT OFFERS ‘NO SEX’

What sex ads?

The CEO of the Internet site Craigslist has denied that the Web site offers sex-related advertising, arguing that it only offers “erotic services.”

In the wake of the grisly slaying of Julissa Brisman, 26, a Manhattan masseuse who met her alleged killer after posting an ad on the popular site, Jim Buckmaster said all offers where money is exchanged for sex is “strictly prohibited” and quickly removed.

“I would not describe any section of our site as ‘sex related,'” Buckmaster wrote in an e-mail to the Boston Globe.

Buckmaster admitted that the site offers an “erotic services” section, he also said it was not designed to offer more than “legitimate escort services, sensual massage, exotic dancers, etc.”

In a series of emails to the newspaper, Buckmaster defended the Web site’s visitors, saying a majority use it to find used furniture or apartments.

Job listings get the most traffic per listing “by an enormous margin” he added, and the housing section is “extremely heavily used as well.”
