BUSH’S BEIJING BID

THE ISSUE: President Bush’s controversial trip to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Though President Bush has had a rough eight years in the White House, it looks like he had the time of his life at the Beijing Olympics (“It’s Games Time!” Aug. 9).

He has not only had a chance to high-five some of the US basketball stars, but to also hug our star, bikini-clad beach-volleyball players.

It not only has done him good, but has done the US Olympic team good for him to go to the Beijing Olympics, as he has become our team’s No. 1 cheerleader.

Despite calls for a boycott by many members of Congress, Bush still flew to Beijing and attended the opening ceremony, along with several leaders of other countries, including French President Nicolas Sarkozy,

The act of Bush and Sarkozy, two prominent heads of state from the Western free world, participating in such an event marred by egregious human-rights abuse is indefensible.

The correct attitude for our leaders is to refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of this repressive government of China and to stand firm in our demand for a just and free China.

There are only two reasons Bush went to China and was polite: To lend China credibility at the Games and, primarily, because the Chinese are big buyers of our Treasury notes and he’s keeping the customer happy.
