Red Bulls trade GK Zach Thornton

By BRIAN LEWIS

The Red Bulls traded goalkeeper Zach Thornton to Chivas USA for future

considerations. In short, Big Zach got dealt for a bag of balls.

“We want to thank Zach for his time with the Red Bulls organization,” sporting director Jeff Agoos said in as release. “He is the consummate

professional and we wish him well with this move to Chivas USA. This is an opportunity for Zach to compete for a starting role, and we did not want to stand in his way.”

Despite his…er, girth, the 34-year-old Thornton has looked sharp in practice and friendlies. Sources say he’s joining Chivas USA by tomorrow and is expected to start in place of departed Brad Guzan.

So, what’s next? Recall Danny Cepero from Harrisburg? And what exactly are those considerations? If it’s allocation cash, will that drop in the bucket help Juan Carlos Osorio land one of his three foreign forward targets he’s scouting this weekend? Or if it’s a pick (or cash) can it be packaged to help him get one of his two MLS striker targets?
