PEANUT DIPLOMACY: CARTER’S HUGS FOR THUGS

It seems that former President Jimmy Carter has adopted Ramsey Clark’s playbook, chosing to act against America’s interests in vain hopes of finding vindication among our enemies for his failed policy vision (“Carter’s True Colors,” Editorial, April 16).

One need only survey the wreckage of Carter’s actions to appreciate that his perversely naive embrace of regimes like North Korea and Iran has made the world a far more dangerous place.

Carter’s visit with Hamas is yet another ego-driven fool’s errand designed to embarrass and offend America and its allies. Sadly, it’s no surprise.

What this country needs is new foreign policy, not more military or more stupid invasions. Carter has it pretty much right.

Carter’s appeasement and incompetence against Iranian aggression in 1979 was the flashpoint of Islamic fundamentalism that led ultimately to 9/11. Now this nosy troublemaker wants to further exacerbate the situation he helped create.

Give it up, Jimmy, you got your Peace Prize. Now let the professionals clean up your mess.

Carter hopes to add to his stellar record of accomplishments by meeting with the leaders of the terrorist organization Hamas.

The president who introduced us to the misery index, gas lines, the seizing of our embassy and taking of our citizens hostage and the failed rescue attempt thinks he can negotiate a settlement with these barbaric thugs who seek the destruction of Israel.

We may as well have Bill Clinton give sexual-harassment training to the Taliban.

Democrats hold yet another high-profile meeting with Islamist leaders, this time sending in Carter to openly and deliberately thwart US anti-terror measures aimed at isolating groups. Voters need to imagine this global jihad against America and Israel in the hands of a President Obama.

I didn’t vote for Carter, and I don’t think he was a good president – but he’s turning out to be one heck of a private citizen. I applaud his meeting with the Hamas leaders, and I hope his activities help finally to force the Israelis to negotiate in good faith with the Palestinians.

Carter, the brilliant yet naive intellectual, must firmly believe that he can ride his shiny white horse into Syria and, waving his magic wand, convince Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal and his followers to lay down their arms so we can all live harmoniously in peace forever.

One slight problem: As president in 1979, he was confronted with a 14-month hostage standoff in the US embassy in Iran. He failed miserably to convince the late Ayatollah Khomeini to free our guys. Then, out of desperation and total frustration, he attempted a rescue mission that proved a disaster.

These two terrorist chiefs possess the same ideology, so why can’t Carter realize that, as Jackie Mason says, “You’re in the wrong business.” My best advice to Carter: Stick to writing books.

Carter doesn’t appear to understand that he served only one term. Not only did he fail to be re-elected, but he left office as one of the most unpopular presidents in US history.

Carter’s continued meddling in foreign affairs is more of a national embarrassment than a benefit. He should retire to his farm in Plains and keep his mouth shut.

Carter’s black-and-white stance, that Israel is wrong and the PLO right, defies reality and rational thinking.

No matter under what auspices he represents himself, a former US president meeting with Mashaal legitimizes a terrorist.
