Hamstring strain KO’s Pedro

MIAMI — A rough season debut for Pedro Martinez got even rougher in the fourth inning Tuesday night. After giving up two home runs and four runs overall, Pedro was lifted after straining his left hamstring on a pitch to Marlins catcher Matt Treanor.

A distraught Martinez was limping as he left Dolphin Stadium to return to New York for an MRI exam. He told SNY that he heard a pop in his hamstring and was in considerable pain.

Martinez grimaced in pain as soon as he threw the pitch, which resulted in a groundout to third. After talking with him near the mound, Willie Randolph pulled him in favor of Jorge Sosa.

The Mets were trailing the Marlins 4-3 at the time of the injury and went on to lose 5-4 in 10 innings when Matt Wise surrendered Robert Andino’s first career homer.

Willie Randolph said afterward that Brooklyn-born Nelson Figueroa is likely to be called up from Triple-A New Orleans to fill out the rotation.
