NEW YORKER SNAGS 12 MAGAZINE NODS

The battle for top dog in the magazine world began in earnest yesterday with the release of the list of finalists for this year’s National Magazine Awards.

Condé Nast-owned The New Yorker, edited by David Remnick, snared 12 nominations – the most of any magazine.

New York magazine, edited by Adam Moss, was next with nine nominations.

Remnick is looking for redemption because last year he also topped the list of finalists with the most nominations, but in a stunning setback he went home empty handed.

Vanity Fair came in third, with six nominations.

The winners will be revealed on May 1.

Moss, who at one time edited the New York Times Magazine, crusaded for years for newspaper-distributed magazines to be considered for National Magazine Awards.

His lobbying effort paid off this year, when the American Society of Magazine Editors, which sponsors the Ellies, opened its doors to newspaper-distributed magazines.

This year, the main Sunday Times magazine received two nominations, while its fashion spin-off “T” scored three. The Times’ sports magazine, Play, got one nomination.

David Granger’s Esquire, which seemed to be on an upswing in recent years, got just one nomination.

Condé Nast Portfolio, the business magazine edited by Joanne Lipman and launched only a year ago, received a single nomination.
