SUDDEN HIT ON PAR WITH ALL THE OTHER POP TARTS

WHO would have thought when Gov. Spitzer was getting serviced by a $1,000-an-hour hooker, the people of the great state of New York would get to groove and hum along?

Yet in the past few days, Ashley Alexandra “Kristen” Dupre has become a singing sensation with her song “What We Want.” Dupre’s tune is very much in the moment of contemporary pop.

It’s riddled with electronic swirls, dance beats and breathy vocals. If the song were delivered by any of the legitimate pop tarts in music, nobody would bat an eye.

On Dupre’s MySpace page, she writes about how music is her first love. That devotion is obvious in this record. It’s carefully made, and she seems to be having fun singing. It’s certainly not the most original piece, but it’s solid pop that you wouldn’t flip off if it came on your car radio.

Her lyrics about desire and satisfying lust are pretty on point. Considering her night job, there couldn’t be more synergy and truth between singer and song.

“I know what you need . . . can you handle me, boy?”

No, as it turns out, he couldn’t.

But being a one-hit wonder isn’t a great accomplishment in music. The real test is whether she can follow up “What We Want” with a song that’ll extend her 15 minutes of fame into a career.

Now that Client 9 is zipped up and out of the picture, who’s next . . . Bill Clinton?
