DAILY NEWS’ PHOTO SHOOT IN THE FOOT

Beauty queen Amy Polumbo says the Daily News carelessly misidentified her in photos it ran yesterday of a young woman partying with friends.

During an emotional interview on NBC’s “Today” show, the embattled Miss New Jersey fought back tears in describing the personal hell she’s endured this past week – with the low point coming from the News’ embarrassing error.

The Daily News’ photos “actually aren’t even of me,” Polumbo said.

When “Today” host Matt Lauer pointed to the three pictures on Page 7, Polumbo said, “I’m not in any three of them.”

Polumbo said the people in the photos are classmates from Wagner College.

The News acknowledged its hurtful goof.

“A source close to Amy Polumbo assured us that the person we identified [as Polumbo] was Amy Polumbo,” said News spokeswoman Jennifer Mauer. “We’ll make the appropriate corrections in the paper [today].”

Stuart Marques, the paper’s newly appointed managing editor following a newsroom bloodbath last month, declined to discuss the photo blunder.
