TIGER’S BABY A CHIP SHOT OFF THE OL’ BLOCK

Tiger’s got a cub.

A day after losing the U.S. Open by one stroke, golf megastar Tiger Woods felt like a winner as he announced the birth of his daughter, Sam Alexis Woods.

The future LPGA star is the first child for Tiger and his Swedish model wife, Elin. “Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully,” Woods wrote on his Web site.

“We want to thank our doctors and the hospital staff for all their dedicated and hard work. This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks. We thank everyone for their well-wishes and continued respect of our privacy.”

The birth yesterday morning capped a whirlwind 24 hours for Tiger.

He suffered a heartbreaking down-to-the-wire defeat to Argentine golfer Angel Cabrera at the U.S. Open just hours before becoming a dad.

Fans had also been on pins and needles about the impending birth because Woods had said he would miss a major tournament to witness it.

It’s not known how the birth will affect his upcoming schedule. Woods is supposed to host a U.S. tournament next month, then fly overseas for the British Open.

It also isn’t known if all those late-night feedings are going to cause him to miss more putts, but Tiger appeared to take things in stride in a recent interview.

“All I know is that Elin and I are excited and that this is far more important than any game of golf,” he said.
