ALA. BIG ON RUDY: POLL

Rudy Giuliani‘s presidential candidacy is running strong in the heart of Dixie – despite his support of abortion rights.

Giuliani stumps today in conservative Alabama, where a poll shows the Republican former New York mayor leading chief rival Sen. John McCain, 29 percent to 23 percent.

But the survey, conducted by the Alabama Education Association, was taken before last week’s GOP presidential debate in which Giuliani’s statements on abortion became a hot-button issue.

The pro-life McCain is hammering Giuliani on the topic.

“Rudy is an admired leadership figure after Sept 11. People here like that he’s tough on crime. He’s a tax cutter and fiscally responsible,” said Alabama GOP Chairman Mike Hubbard.
